The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
