Federal Reserve Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority cut borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of employment gains created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in August.

The figure of positions created to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Continued Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication when the closure began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for September that indicated that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Prices rose 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
