Patients Coming Off Anti-Obesity Injections Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research suggests that individuals who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying such drugs need to be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the therapy concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically experience a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Doctors suggest the way of the injections accounts for the accelerated regain.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

People who have discontinued the jabs explain a intense return of appetite.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you're instantly starving," described one woman.

The struggle is compounded if users have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, clinicians caution that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing behavioural management.
